Expectations of business have never been higher with respect to corporate ethics and responsibility to their stakeholders. The concept of environmental stewardship has also changed. As global leaders in the consumption of energy and natural resources, as well as emissions of green house gases, U.S. businesses now realize that mere compliance with existing law is no longer an acceptable performance standard. While one may debate the extent to which climate change is human-induced and/or the severity of its future impact, the facts are clear that our current use of energy and natural resources is unsustainable.
Businesses have already demonstrated their willingness and ability to respond to social-environmental issues with greater agility than the governments that regulate them. While corporate sustainability has been globally embraced by numerous large-cap companies, its downward proliferation to smaller entities seems impeded by a lack of understanding of what it means to be sustainable.
